Implementation of laminate is a very successful technique that is used to modify some problems of front (anterior) teeth. Laminate is fundamentally different from crowning. Dentists make a crown when most part of tooth has been destroyed. The most common case is after root canal therapy, but it's not the same when laminating. Laminate is a very thin layer like artificial nail that is placed on the tooth. Dentists have to reduce the tooth about 2 mm when crowning to provide enough space for crown. However, when implementing laminate, the tooth structure is not reduced and this point is of great importance for dental health.
1. Direct (with composite structure)
2. indirect (with a structure made of porcelain)
Both methods have their advocates and dentists choose one of them based on individual conditions.
Type one- direct (with composite structure), this method can be done in one session and the used substance is called composite.
This substance is added layer after layer on the teeth to establish the proper form of tooth. The advantage of this method is
modifying problems immediately in the office.
Type two- indirect (with a structure made of porcelain). This method is implemented in 3 sessions. The first session is reducing and
casting; the second session, laminate test; and the third session, cementation. Of advantages of laboratory type is spending short
time for each person in the office. But the entire process from casting to delivering takes one week. The structure of the second
type is of porcelain, made in the lab and applied on the tooth.
In the second type, modifying of laminate problems is performed in the lab. the first one has a lot of advocates because it will be
done in one session.
